If your car looks rough but you still want to do some good in Memphis, you’re in the right place. With Rides for Pride, body damage does not disqualify your vehicle. Dents from a Midtown parking lot, rust from years in South Memphis, a cracked windshield after a storm in Bartlett, or accident damage from I‑240 — we can still accept it. We help you turn that problem car into support for Heritage for the Blind’s services for people who are blind or visually impaired.
Here’s how it works in Tennessee: you don’t fix anything, and you don’t pay for towing. We schedule free pickup anywhere in the Memphis Metro — Downtown, Cordova, Germantown, Collierville, Frayser, Whitehaven, or across the river in West Memphis. Heritage for the Blind accepts cars in any cosmetic condition. Your vehicle is sold as‑is, and your tax deduction is based on the actual sale price. If it sells for more than $500, you’ll use IRS Form 1098‑C; if it sells for less, you still receive a guaranteed $500 minimum tax receipt. The only difference heavy body damage makes is it may lower the sale amount and, in turn, the possible deduction — but it never stops you from donating.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Tell us about your damaged vehicle
Share the basics: year, make, model, and where it’s sitting in the Memphis Metro. Be honest about the dents, rust, cracked glass, or accident or storm damage. Cosmetic condition won’t disqualify it; we just need the facts so our towing partner and auction or recycler know what to expect when they receive your car.
2. Schedule a free Memphis pickup
We arrange free towing anywhere around Memphis—Downtown, East Memphis, Cordova, Germantown, Collierville, or nearby suburbs. Running or not, wrecked or weather‑damaged, you don’t pay a dime. We’ll work with your schedule, including evenings or weekends when available, so you can get that problem vehicle out of the driveway without any stress.
3. Sign a simple title transfer at pickup
When the tow truck arrives, you’ll hand over the keys (if you have them) and sign the Tennessee title to transfer ownership. This step is what officially moves liability off of you and onto the program. If your title is damaged or you’re unsure how to sign it, we’ll walk you through the Tennessee requirements before pickup.
4. Your car sells as‑is—no repairs needed
After pickup, your vehicle is taken to a local auction, buyer, or recycler. The body damage stays exactly as it is; you never have to fix dents, replace glass, or address rust. The actual sale proceeds go to Heritage for the Blind, supporting services for people who are blind or visually impaired across the country.
5. Receive your Memphis-friendly tax receipt
Once your car sells, Rides for Pride sends you a written tax receipt. If it sells for more than $500, your deduction is based on that sale price and reported on IRS Form 1098‑C. If it sells for less, you still receive a guaranteed $500 minimum allowed deduction, so even a heavily damaged vehicle can deliver real tax benefits.
6. Enjoy the cleared space and local impact
That dented, rusted, or wrecked car is gone from your driveway, yard, or apartment lot, and you’ve turned a Memphis headache into help for people living with vision loss. No repair bills, no selling hassles, and no towing costs—just a clean slate and a clear conscience knowing your unwanted vehicle made a real difference.
Potential complications to watch for
Severe structural damage can lower your final deduction
Tip: A car with major frame damage, heavy rust-through, or significant storm damage may sell for less than a cleaner vehicle. That only affects the deduction amount, not your ability to donate. You’ll still receive a $500 minimum tax receipt even if your damaged car sells for less than that at auction or to a recycler.
Missing or incorrect Tennessee title can delay pickup
Tip: We can usually only complete a donation when the title is available and correctly signed. If your title is lost, damaged, or still in a previous owner’s name, contact us before scheduling. We’ll explain how to request a replacement from the Tennessee DMV so your pickup in Memphis isn’t delayed at the last minute.
Blocked or unsafe vehicle locations slow towing
Tip: If your damaged car is wedged behind other vehicles, up against a fence, or in a cramped alley or backyard in Midtown or South Memphis, the tow truck may need extra planning. Let us know about tight access, flat tires, or a missing wheel in advance so we can send the right equipment and avoid rescheduling.
Personal items and plates left in the car
Tip: Before the tow truck arrives, clear out personal belongings and check the trunk and glovebox, especially if the car’s been sitting for a while. In Tennessee, you’re generally responsible for removing your license plates. Doing this ahead of time makes pickup smoother and prevents headaches after the vehicle is gone.
